From New Franchise Owner to Multi-Unit Owner in 9 Months

Here at The Camp Transformation Center we think it’s incredibly important to celebrate the success of our franchise owners. This past week we caught up with Jose Reynoso who 9 months ago opened his first location, The Camp TC Livermore. As a new franchise owner he was concerned about the many challenges he might face. He was concerned that his lack of industry knowledge might make being a franchisee difficult. He was concerned that his lack of business knowledge would be a detriment. However, here we are 9 months later and he is now opening his 2nd location, The Camp TC Dublin.

These doubts that Jose had about himself are very common when any entrepreneur is looking to take on a new challenge. The best part of being a franchise owner is that you are in business for yourself but not by yourself. So we thought it would be great if Jose could share some of his insider tips to success to help our newest franchise owners, and prospective franchise owners alike.

Top Tips from Jose:

  1. Location: Find a place with good visibility and lots of parking. Make sure it’s easy to get in and out of. It’s also important to look at other existing Camp locations either in person or online before signing your lease. This way you can visualize what your space will look like, how you’ll lay out the equipment, and how traffic will flow through the space. Also look for a place that needs little to no construction. Electrical and plumbing are the most expensive parts of construction followed by demolition. This will significantly reduce your startup costs.
  1. Training: Attend the new franchise owner training provided by The Camp and pay attention. This will teach you the ins and outs of the business. Follow the template, don’t deviate from the plan and master the computer systems, reporting, and daily operating procedures. Be sure to invest your time into training with your team daily and provide positive feedback. This will build their confidence and create a fun work environment.
  1. Staffing: Hire staff that shares your passion and vision. They should be focused on serving your members, creating a welcoming environment, and helping members achieve results. Staff should keep the location clean, arrive on time, and be courteous to patrons at all times.
  1. Pre-Sal: Jose suggested setting your goals at double what the plan calls for. This way if you fall short (60% of goal) you’ll still be incredibly successful since you doubled the initial goal of new membership. He did this at both locations, including Livermore which opened during the pandemic. If he can do it, so can you.
  1. Put in the work: You have to put in the work if you want to be successful. Jose worked every day for the first 3 months. This commitment to the success of his location is a big reason he was able to open a second location so quickly. He believed in himself, the business model, and the brand. As Jose puts it “noone is going to care about your business the way you do”.
  1. Know your numbers: It is incredibly important to put together a solid business plan and know your numbers. You should know what your monthly expenses are and how that translates into sales. What is your EFT/Draft (the amount of revenue coming in from monthly memberships). What are your monthly/ yearly goals for retail and supplement sales? What are your goals for new member acquisition, net member gain, and revenue increases on a monthly and yearly basis?
  1. Culture: You have to create an environment that is both great for the members and the staff. Work hard to make sure you are interacting with members and staff daily. Checking in on the culture/vibe of your club will go a long way in creating a memorable experience for your members who in turn will refer friends and family. This will also increase your retention rate.
